LAWSAN Holds Dinner/AWARD NIGHT.
The Faculty of Law in the University of Calabar just concluded
their law week, Joseph Ochang, 300level Library and information Science writes
On the 24th of October, 2014. Venetian Arena which is undoubtedly
one of the most expensive event centers in the city of calabar played host to
the University of calabar faculty of law for their annual award/dinner night.
The event which was part of the activities to mark the lawsan week attracted
the la crème de la crème of the society.
Present at the dinner was the Senate leader of the federal republic
of Nigeria, Distinguished Senator Victor Ndoma Egba, The Vice Chancellor of the
University of Calabar, Prof. James Epoke, The Registrar, Dr (Mrs) Julia Omang.

Others included the cross river state chief judge, Hon. Justice
Okoi Itam, Justice Bassey Ikpeme, Prince Ukpong Akpabio and a host of others.
In the words of the dean of the faculty, Prof. Cyril Ndifon. This
is a double barrel celebration because three years ago, a dinner was held which
led to the birth of the new faculty of law complex, Dinner/Award Night is an
annual event of the faculty of law and specifically, the awards for today is in
appreciation of Promises kept. We cannot fail to appreciate those who have
supported us as a faculty in one way or the other..

The dean of the faculty, prof. Cyril Ndifon who is the first
Indigenous Professor of Law from Cross River State enumerated some of the new
developments in the faculty which included regularity and attendance in class
as failure to meet 75% attendance will mean that you will not be eligible to
write examination. Introduction of the dress code marshal that work together
with the Ethical committee members to maintain and sustain the high standards
that are expected of a lawyer.
The Vice Chancellor in his speech use the opportunity toinform
everyone that the University had approved the addition of two more departments
to become four departments in the faculty of Law. The departments were mainly

Among those who received award for their contribution to the
development of the faculty of law in the university of calabar included
Secretary to the Governmrnt og the federation, Sen. Ayim Pius Ayim, The
Executive Governor of Akwa Ibom State, Chief Godswill Akpabio, The cross river
state deputy governor, Bar. Efiok Cobham, Hon. Justice Bassey Ikpeme, The
senate leader of the federal republic of Nigeria, Sen. Victor Ndoma Egba, Sen. Prof
Ben Ayade representing cross river north in the senate, Senator Ita Enang and
senator Aloysius Etok, Ekong Effiom Otu and prince ukpong Akpabio.
High point of the occasion was the presentation of awards.
On behalf of the awardees, the senate leader expressed gratitude
for the honour down them and pledged their commitment to continue to contribute
their quota to the development of the faculty. he said the faculty of law
complex which he facilitated will be completed and furnished adequately for
use.
Another awardees, Prince Ukpong Akpabio was excited about the
honour an award given to him for his little contribution pledged to continue to
do so. Friends of prince Ukpong Akpabio Worldwide came with Prince Ukpong
Akpabio to receive the award. In appreciation of the award, friends of prince
ukpong akpabio donated a brand new 14 sitter bus to the faculty and in
addition, Prince Ukpong Akpabio instituted a Hundred Thousand naira (100,000)
grant for the student with the highest CGPA in each class from year two to
final year.
He said this is a replicate of what he is doing in the faculty of
law in the university of Uyo to encourage hard work and healthy competition
amongst students.
In an appreciation speech by the lawsan president, comr. Dennis
Ukpong, he thanked God for the gift of life to see this day come to pass. His
appreciation also went to the dean of the faculty, Prof. Cyril Ndifon, and
every other staff who had contributed in one way or the other to the success of
the event.

There was enough to eat and drink
In an interview with the General secretary of the association,
Comr. Omligbe John, he said he was excited to be part of this years dinner as
it was a spectacular one.
This years law dinner took a different dimension as part of
activities to mark the week, there was inter class football competition which
saw the penultimate class taking the trophy. There was also a health seminar
and free mosquito nets were distributed to all who were present.
There was also picnic organized for the students and finally, a
thanks giving service in appreciation to God almighty for the success granted.
